This is a quick demonstration of my backstrap weaving process. The scarves woven in this traditional way forms an important part of my crafting and business life.
Creating each scarf is always a satisfying and therapeutic experience. The back-strap loom is my loom of choice due to its connection to my heritage and also for its portability. Unlike the other rigid heddle looms, it is simply made of beams and sticks which can be dismantled and put back before a weaving project.
The only down-side of this loom in my experience is the potential to create problems with the elbow & lower back if care is not taken with posture and tension. The key, I’ve found is to weave relaxed and in blocks of an hour, switching hands to draw the sword. weft sticks and while creating the “shed”.
